Competency based training & assessment
Competency-based training (CBT) is an approach to vocational education and training that places emphasis on what a person can do in the workplace rather than what they know as a result of completing a program of training.
Competency-based training programs are made up of units broken into segments which are called elements. These are based on standards set by industry, and assessments are designed to ensure each student has achieved all the elements (skills and knowledge) required by each unit in order to gain their course qualification. Your course information sheet will include a list of all the learning outcomes associated with the course.
Each course is made up of the required number of core units and elective subjects which have been chosen to offer the best all around knowledge and skills base.
Assessment and evidence of competency
At Coomera Training College competency in individual units of study must be demonstrated through a combination of;
- Role Plays
- Simulations and
- Demonstrations
to demonstrate skills and practical abilities in each subject and the evidence of competency will be assessed visually by the trainer.
- Research Projects and case studies
- Written assignments and
- Examinations
to demonstrate knowledge of the subject and the evidence of competency will be assessed by way of written submissions or oral presentations.

Literacy & numeracy skills
Business studies are concentrated very much on office skills of varying degrees. As such appropriate literacy & numeracy skills are very important and in evaluating your performance we will look at these aspects closely. Should you have any difficulty in these areas please discuss this with your teacher who will advise you of your options.
Assessment methods and times
Where students are unable, due to physical or mental disabilities, ill health or family emergency, to undergo assessment as outlined in each subject alternative forms & times of assessment must be negotiated with the teacher prior to the assessment date. In the event that illness is the reason why an assessment cannot be completed a doctor's certificate must be supplied.
Resitting Assessments
In the event of a 'not yet competent' outcome the student will have an opportunity to re-do the assessments for that unit at no cost. Should a further re-sit be necessary a cost of $75.00 per assessment will apply. If, after re-doing the assessment(s), the student still does not meet the necessary criteria for competency he/she must redo the entire unit (cost on application) in order to achieve the full qualification.

Appeal Procedure
Should a student not agree with the outcome of an assessment or any other issue the following procedure is to be followed:
1. Discuss the matter with the class teacher
2. If discussion with class teacher does not resolve the issue then the matter should be taken up with the College Director.
3. In the event that the College Director is not able to resolve the issue then the student should take the matter up with the Principal of the parent College (Coomera Anglican College).
4. The student may, at any time in the appeals procedure, approach Queensland Department of Employment and Training to seek advice or clarification on appeal issues.
Qualifications
Upon completing each unit of competency a score of 'competent' or 'not yet competent' will be awarded to each student depending on whether the student has successfully completed the assessment tasks for the given unit of competency.
Upon successful completion of all units within the course qualification undertaken a nationally recognised Certificate and a Final Statement of Attainment will be issued.

Recognition of current competency / Recognition of prior learning (RPL)
If you have previously studied a unit being offered as part of our course with another registered training organisation, or you have relevant work experience in a field being studied you may be eligible for "RPL".
This means you may not have to complete the unit for which you believe you should get RPL and still get your full qualification.
Note: An administration fee of $200 per unit will be charged for RPL applications. The unit fee will be deducted from the total cost of the course if you are successful.
Application for recognition of current skills / prior learning
In order to apply for RPL in a given unit, you must provide proof that you have achieved competency in that unit. You can do that by;
- Providing a current statement of results from a previous course where that unit was studied (and competency was gained). Note: where the unit(s) are the same as those covered by Coomera Training College but unit codes are different it is the students responsibility to provide written evidence that the unit(s) sought for RPL exactly match the Coomera Training College unit(s).
- Providing other evidence that you can do the necessary tasks involved in the given unit. For example:
- Demonstration of the necessary skills by way of:
- Visual demonstration
- Answering questions
- Written assessment
- Demonstration of recent work experience in that competency
- Submission of any other relevant forms of evidence of competency
Students must apply (where possible) for RPL of a unit at least 2 weeks prior to commencement of study of that unit to avoid having to catch up on studies should the RPL application be unsuccessful.
Once your application has been received we will review the evidence you have provided and advise you of the outcome within two working weeks.
'Application for RPL' forms are available on the enrolments page.
Coomera Training College recognises the AQTF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other Registered Training Organisations
